My thesis is on early warning signals for epidemiological regime shifts. I work on cholera dynamics, and on where deep-learning early warning methods stop being reliable.

The wider interest is mathematical biology and applied dynamical systems. Most of it comes down to thresholds — the point at which a population stops recovering, or a disease outbreak changes character. The reason for locating them is to do it while management decisions still have time to matter. Work in progress includes density-dependent hybridization and reproductive interference models.

Filming is where a lot of these questions start. I spend enough time watching animals that the modeling questions tend to arrive from the field.
